Dear Reader, Happy New Year!
I have been lucky in 2018 and had the chance to be flexible while working on my outline, developing new skills, helping young talents and travel. I met some incredible and talented people, saw amazing things and visited some cool destinations. This year I decided to start the New Year by spending some time alone in a new country that I’ve never been to before. The reason? I wanted to take some time off to focus on my outline, reflect and appreciate everything I that have from a distance – so I packed lightly and went to Madeira.
I’ve always heard beautiful things about the Portuguese culture, food and constant sunny weather and was excited to explore the local area on my own. I also wanted to try several hotels in the area and was fortunate enough to be accommodated at two hotels – Hotel Windsor and Sé Boutique Hotel. I will post another article for my Madeira Mini Travel Guide to include my thoughts on both, but because Sé Boutique Hotel was so elegant and unique, I’m dedicating this post solely to Sé Boutique Hotel.
Sé Boutique Hotel – Funchal
Think “urban meets contemporary and artsy style re-created”. The hotel is located in the heart of the Funchal city, just a few minutes from Cathedral of Funchal and some of the major attractions of the city – The Old Town, Farmers Market, Cable Cars and Marina. As I entered the Lobby, I was in awe of the gorgeous artworks and decor inspired by the Cathedral – a monument of great historical, architectural and artistic value, built in 1493. To my left was their Lobby Café and Champagne Bar connected to a designer boutique with exclusive pieces by Sandra Vieira Couture – a designer I had a pleasure to collaborate with during my stay in Funchal that I will dedicate another blogpost to 🙂
As I went up to the second floor where I had my room, I was faced with more beautiful art, colorful velvet couches, and rustic details. It’s as though I had entered a gallery that allowed me to feel at peace and appreciate the beautiful colors surrounding me. Finally, I felt like a had time to just relax.
André Concalves, the artist and Creative Director of the Hotel and Delia Corte, jewelry designer and manager of the Champagne Bar, did a wonderful job of introducing me to the designs, art and culture of Madeira. Based on my experience, they has successfully combined the different elements to make the hotel an unforgettable experience not only through aesthetics, but related events, dining and music. In addition to the elegant interior design, the Sé Boutique has a restaurant, lounge bar/ Café and roof top to enjoy beautiful views of the city along with delicious cocktails and snacks. I could have easily stayed all day and night at the hotel, work, have cocktails, enjoy the views and just hang out.
I stayed in the gigantic Deluxe room, that just like the hotel, had a very elegant decor but more of modern aesthetics and was equipped with a neatly-made extremely comfortable King Size Bed, large smart tv, mini-bar, coffee maker, air conditioning and wi-fi.
There was plenty of closet space and a perfect modern desk to work. The bathroom was one of the latest I’ve probably ever seen and had a bright luxury feel. Customer service was excellent.
After having spent some time alone, a friend came to Funchal to stay at the same hotel for a few nights so we decided to do a photoshoot and explore the city together. We had some delicious Portuguese baked goods for breakfast, then went for a run around the Marina where we later indulged in icecream and cappuccino at Golden Gate Grand Café (recommended!) before heading to the Cable Cars for breathtaking overview of the city. I’ll write more about my Madeira experience in another article so stay tuned. However, I wanted to share with you some highlights from our photoshoot at the hotel as part of the collaboration with Sé Boutique Hotel and Sandra Vieira Couture that I belive turned out to be a great success, we had so much fun shooting there!
Both the interior and exterior design along with customer service made for a wonderful stay during my trip to Funchal. This hotel is truly Instagram-able and made our photos turn out amazing (I will share more photos from the photoshoots in later posts). I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Funchal and would happily come back here again to enjoy this paradise. Thank you, Sé Boutique Hotel, for such a wonderful experience.
